India is at the helm of a generational water crisis. Over 600 million people are combating high to extreme water stress daily, according to a NITI Aayog report. And while water is undoubtedly necessary for life as a whole, it is also important to break down this crisis for the multi-dimensional issue it is, affection at once, human life, economic growth, and food security. For the agriculture sector, this crisis affects not just their environment but also their livelihoods. This growing scarcity combined with an increase in droughts has overwhelmed the industry that employs over half of the country’s workforce. And with over 80% of the country’s water supply going into the agricultural sector, this also isn’t a neglectable crisis. But ,driven largely by system wide mismanagement of resources, it is an avoidable one.
KRISHI (Knowledge and Resources for Integrated Sustainable Harvest and Irrigation) was founded as a way to address this looming crisis. Our dual ended approach of technical intervention combined with narrative advocacy give us a step in the right direction of sustainable agriculture, where the right tool works together with a deep understanding of the people who use them.
